Techne Needs Your Support for Our Summer Workshop Tour!

Rain City Rock Camp for Girls .. solder time!
Rain City Rock Camp for Girls .. solder time!

Techne has officially kicked off their 2014 Girls Rock Camp Workshop fundraiser!

Last summer TECHNE brought their DIY electronic music workshops to over a hundred young women at Girls Rock Camps in Oakland, Sacramento, Portland and Seattle, and they were a huge success!

This year we’re continuing our partnership with several US-based Girls Rock Camps with an ambitious goal of presenting workshops in 8 cities including Philadelphia, PA, Baltimore, MD, Washington, DC, Charlottesville, VA, Nashville, TN, Charleston, SC, Baton Rouge, and New Orleans, LA!

We are also adding a new twist: a concert in each city, featuring Bonnie & Suzanne in duet, and fellow local female artists. These events will provide much needed modeling of women electronic musicians practicing their craft.

We’re asking for your support to bring TECHNE workshops to hundreds of young women this summer! Please donate to our Indiegogo campaign and become a crucial part of the Techne revolution!

TECHNE: A Creative and Educational Model Emphasizing Difference
Wednesday February 19th at 5pm
Grant Recital Hall, Brown University
105 Benevolent Street, Providence RI

TECHNE is an arts education organization offering modular workshops that combine sound, technology and improvisation. Our workshops incorporate organic, analog and digital realms as tools for expression and provide opportunities for students to listen, dialog, share and vocalize. An important aspect of TECHNE is addressing gender imbalance within electronic music fields by introducing young women to technology and alternative ideologies of music making.

Join TECHNE’s co-founders, electronic musicians Bonnie Jones and Suzanne Thorpe, for a discussion of how their creative careers have influenced and instigated their work in education and arts organizing. Thorpe and Jones will examine the criteria of musical affiliation, and discuss the implementation of alternative modeling through their educational outreach programs.

WE’RE STILL IN NEED OF LAST MINUTE EMERGENCY FUNDS!

Dear Friend,

TECHNE Still Needs Your Support!

Thanks to over 100 contributors TECHNE met our initial Indiegogo Fundraising goal of $4,000 on July 2nd. Suzanne Thorpe and I will be starting our Girls Rock Camp Electronic Music Workshop tour on Monday July 29th heading to San Francisco, Sacramento, Portland and Seattle!

But here’s the catch —

A grant that we were counting on securing has not come through leaving us about $1,000 short of meeting our budget for this trip.

Our expenses so far have included

  • About $1,200 of new equipment needed for workshops including, soldering irons, helping hands, wire strippers, goggles, contact microphones, adapters and more.
  • $1200 for 2 Roundtrip Airfare from East Coast to West Coast
  • $1000 car rental and estimated gas for 16 days

Suzanne and I are humbly reaching out again for your support. If you missed a chance to contribute and would still like to support TECHNE and Girls Rock Camps, please consider donating now through my secure PayPal account.

For as little as $10  you can help fund this ambitious project teaching over 100 young girls and women at Girls Rock Camps how to build contact microphones and explore improvised electronic music!

Please consider offering your support!

Eternally grateful
Bonnie Jones & Suzanne Thorpe

TECHNE NEEDS YOUR HELP!

This year we’re super excited about our new partnership with several US-based Girls Rock Camps. Our 2013/2014 goal is to bring our Electronic Music: Powered by Girls workshop to as many of their campers as possible!

To kick off our collaboration, we’re hitting the road this summer heading West to run workshops in San Francisco, Portland and Seattle.

A partnership between Girls Rock Camps and TECHNE is an awesome opportunity for us to work with organizations that already understand the transformative role of musical expression in a young girl’s life. Together we strengthen each other’s programming, outreach and commitment.

Girls Rock camps are independent and staffed primarily by volunteers. Each camp has to negotiate the various pressures of balancing excellent programming and staff and increasing better access to students with tight and getting tighter budgets.

And here’s where you come in…

By contributing to our campaign TECHNE has a chance to provide unique programming without placing additional financial burden on the individual camps.

Your support will enable TECHNE and Girls Rock camps to offer kick-ass workshops in electronic music to young women!

Please consider supporting our Indiegogo campaign!

The workshop uses the creative arts of sound and improvisation to introduce young women to technology. The participants will learn how to build oscillators and contact microphones to turn everyday objects into instruments. Once participants have constructed their sound and instruments, Thorpe will lead them in a group improvisation. The workshops are followed by a public presentation by the composers using analog and digital technologies.
